San Diego Sports Recap: Feb. 2nd

San Diego State University’s men and women’s team were both in action yesterday along with San Diego’s men’s team.

To start the day, the Aztecs’ men’s team dropped only their fifth game of the season. The 22nd ranked Aztecs lost by 3 to the Air Force Falcons, 70-67. Jamal Franklin led SDSU, scoring 25 points, pulling in 10 rebounds, and adding 6 assists. The Falcons were led by Michael Lyons. Lyons scored 20 points, grabbed 5 boards, and added 4 assists. The biggest stat difference was three-ponters. Air Force went 12-30 behind the arc while SDSU only went 2-19. For SDSU, they now fall to 4-3 in conference play while Air Force moves on to 5-2.

The SDSU men’s team will take on Boise State on Wednesday night at home.

Next, the Lady Aztecs pulled out a resounding win against the Lady Falcons, winning 68-46. Chelsea Hopkins led the team in scoring, scoring 15 while Courtney Clements added 14. Five players were in double figures for SDSU. Senior Alicia Leipprandt led all scorers with 18 points while fellow senior Dymond James added 11 points and 8 rebounds. SDSU move to 6-1 in the conference while Air Force fall to 1-6.

The SDSU women’s team will also take on Boise State on Wednesday night.

Lastly, on a day where five ranked teams fell to unranked teams, the San Diego Toreros were just two points away from upsetting (7) Gonzaga. It came down to the last shot, one that Ken Rancifer put up that was blocked by Gonzaga’s Elias Harris. Statistic wise, the two teams were basically even down the stretch. SD outrebounded the Bulldogs, 38-32, though. Johnny Dee led the Toreros with 21 points and 7 rebounds while Chirs Anderson added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists. For the Bulldogs, Harris led the way with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. SD falls to 4-4 in conference play while Gonzaga moves to 8-0.

The SD Toreros will be back in action Monday night against Loyala Marymount.
