Toreros go 1-1 against BYU Thursday night

The San Diego Toreros men’s and women’s team were both in action action against BYU last night. The men’s team picked up a victory while the women fell short.

In the men’s game, San Diego snapped a three-game losing streak with a 74-68 win. After falling short by one basket against highly ranked Gonzaga, the Toreros came out with a bit of excitement against BYU Thursday night. Johnny Dee led USD in scoring with 19. Ken Rancifer had an unusually high scoring game, adding 16 points and 6 assists. Chris Manresa added to the win with a solid 10 points and 10 rebound performance.

For BYU, who trailed the entire 2nd hald, Tyler Haws continued in his high scoring ways and dropped 27. Brandon Davis added a 20 point 10 rebound performance but neither of them could halt the USD offense.

San Diego now moves to 13-12 and 6-4 in conference play. They’ll take the court again Saturday against Saint Mary’s at home.

The Lady Toreros weren’t so fortunate. They came into last night’s game riding a four-game winning streak and left with it snapped. Amy Kame tried her best as she scored 18 points and added 5 asists while sophomore Katelyn McDaniel was the only other USD player in double figures with 13. Overall, the Toreros shot only 33.3 percent from the field and were outrebounded by 5.

For BYU, Keilana Unga led the charge with 17 points and 7 boards while Kim Beeston added 14 points. The Cougars shot 42.6 percent from the field on the night.

The Lady Toreros now fall to 15-8 and 7-4 in the conference. They won’t be on the court again until Monday, when they’ll take on Pepperdine at home.
