Hopkins named Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

For the sixth time this season, the San Diego State women’s basketball team has the Mountain West Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. This past week’s recipient was senior Chelsea Hopkins. Hopkins is no stranger to the accolade. This is the fourth time this season, and sixth time in her career, that she’s won the award. She’s now the only SDSU player to single-handedly earn the award four times in one season in the history of the MWC.
For the week, Hopkins averaged 15 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. One reason for her outstanding performances is the fact that she takes good shots and she makes them. She shot 65 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line.
In the first game of the week against Boise State, Hopkins scored 13 points, pulled in 6 rebounds, added 7 assists and recorded a career-high 5 steals. She led the Aztecs en route to a resounding 64-40 win over the Broncos.
Against rival Fresno State, Hopkins put up outstanding numbers. She recorded her 14th career double-double with 17 points and 11 assists. Adding to her ninth double-double of the season, she had 7 assists and 2 steals. She shout a blistering 70 percent from the floor, leading the Aztecs to the top of the MWC standings.
Hopkins leads the MWC in assists, defensive rebounding, and steals, averaging 7.1 assists, 7.1 defensive boards and 3 steals respectively. On top of being named the MWC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, she was also named the MW Player of the week by College Madness.
SDSU has taken home the MWC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week six times now this season.
SDSU hopes to continue their strong play and work their way up the rankings going into the NCAA Tournament.
