Padres Spring Training Quick Hits

The Padres Spring Training is in full swing (no pun intended). In case you’ve missed any news, here’s a quick recap thus far.

Yasmani Grandal takes BP: Suspended catcher Yasmani Grandal is allowed to participate in drills even though he’s suspended for the first 50 games of the season. Coming into camp, there was concern about a pain he was having in his finger. He had two inflamed tendons on one of his fingers, which kept him from hitting all winter. Grandal took batting practice Tuesday and reported that he felt fine. Grandal is a switch hitter and said he hit fine from both sides of the plate.

Trevor Hoffman sighting: The legendary Padres closer Trevor Hoffman showed up to camp to pitch surprise batting practice. His first victim? Prospect catcher Austin Hodges.

Gyorko officially competing for 2nd base: The Padres have officially entered #1 prospect Jedd Gyorko into the battle for second base. Originally a third baseman, Gyorko will go back to his younger days on the right side of the infield.

Pitching Update: Sean O’Sullivan will start in the Padres first Spring Training game with Tyson Ross starting on Saturday and Freddy Garcia getting the nod on Sunday. All three pitchers are prospective candidates for the Padres rotation.

Injury: Cameron Maybin is gingerly  getting back into action as he’s been battling an on-going sore wrist to start camp.
