Mathews will get chance to prove himself in 2013

San Diego Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco took the podium today at the NFL Combine. One of the things he said might make a lot of Chargers fans unhappy. Moving forward, it seems that Telesco wants the injury-prone Ryan Mathews to be the number one guy.

He is really talented, a really good back. He’s got size, and he runs well, but he’s had some injuries, too. I think he can be a bell-cow back, but he needs to prove that on the field by staying healthy. I think he’s going to have a chance to do that. All the talent is there. – Tom Telesco, Chargers GM

The statement made by the new GM seemingly squashed all the rumors that Mathews would take a back seat to another back in the Chargers new regime. While Telesco didn’t deny that he wanted a new back, he made it a point to say that any new back brought in would be a compliment to Mathews.

There’s no doubt about it. I’m a big believer in two backs. These guys took a lot of punishment during the year. To have two backs back there — actually, you’d like three, but you’d like to have two backs who you can lean on so Ryan doesn’t have to take the bulk of the carries, week in and week out. – Telesco, Chargers GM

Telesco also said that the style of running back made no difference to him but that they would be on the look for a back to go along with Mathews for  the 2013 season.
