San Diego Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco took the podium today at the NFL Combine. One of the things he said might make a lot of Chargers fans unhappy. Moving forward, it seems that Telesco wants the injury-prone Ryan Mathews to be the number one guy.

"He is really talented, a really good back. He’s got size, and he runs well, but he’s had some injuries, too. I think he can be a bell-cow back, but he needs to prove that on the field by staying healthy. I think he’s going to have a chance to do that. All the talent is there. – Tom Telesco, Chargers GM"

The statement made by the new GM seemingly squashed all the rumors that Mathews would take a back seat to another back in the Chargers new regime. While Telesco didn’t deny that he wanted a new back, he made it a point to say that any new back brought in would be a compliment to Mathews.

"There’s no doubt about it. I’m a big believer in two backs. These guys took a lot of punishment during the year. To have two backs back there — actually, you’d like three, but you’d like to have two backs who you can lean on so Ryan doesn’t have to take the bulk of the carries, week in and week out. – Telesco, Chargers GM"

Telesco also said that the style of running back made no difference to him but that they would be on the look for a back to go along with Mathews for  the 2013 season.
