USD goes 3-0 at UNCW Wilmington Tournament

The Toreros traveled across the map to North Carolina to take part in the Hughes Brothers Tournament at Brooks Field this weekend and came away with three wins.

In the first game, USD took on Gardner-Webb. Kris Bryant led the Toreros with a 3-4 game, hitting two doubles and a home run en route to a 5-0 victory for the Toreros. Bryant drove in two of the five runs. First baseman Connor Joe and Andrew Daniel hit back-to-back jacks in the 4th inning. Michael Wagner pitched 7.0 scoreless innings and gave way to Max MacNabb in the 8th inning. MacNabb followed suite and threw two scoreless innings of his own en route to his first save of the season. The Toreros piled up 12 hits total.

In the second game, USD played the hometown team of UNC Wilmington. Toreros’ pitcher Dylan Covey pitched 6.0 scoreless innings while recording a career-high 12 strikeouts. The two teams took a scoreless game into the 10th inning, where USD decided they’d had enough and finally put up some runs. Dillon Checkal doubled to lead off the 10th and was pulled for a pinch runner, who later scored off of a fielding error. Later in the inning Dillon Haupt hit a sac-fly to make it 2-0. The Seahawks couldn’t answer in the bottom half and the Toreros won 2-0.

Haupt continued to stay strong in the last game of the weekend against Stony Brook. Haupt went 4-5, blasting two homers and driving in five of the Toreros’ 15 runs on the day. USD hit five home runs on the day, with five players getting multi-hit games. Wes Judish only pitched 2.0 innings in the start, letting Sheldon Ekstrand to get the win after pitching 4.0 innings out of the bullpen. Ekstrand only allowed two hits in his time on the moun.

USD is now 7-4 for the season and have won five straight. They’ll be back in action Tuesday against Cal State Fulerton at home at 6:00 pm PT (9:00 pm ET).
