NFL Free Agency: Eric Winston

Last night the Chiefs cut right tackle Eric Winston just one year after he signed with the team. Winston has been in the league since 2006, spending most of his career in Houston before going to the Chiefs in 2012.

With the Chargers in the market for an upgrade on the offensive line, should they look Winston’s way?

Last season was rough for the Midland, Texas native. He was flagged for a false start five times, was caught holding twice and allowed 6.0 sacks. He’s allowed 42 tackles over seven seasons, averaging 6.0 sacks allowed per season.

Winston was a third round pick in the draft and would’ve gone higher if it hadn’t been for an ACL injury. Coming out of college, he was regarded as one of the quicker lineman. That could have been due to the fact that he played tight end in high school and then converted to tackle in college.

Winston is most known for calling out Chiefs’ fans for cheering after an injury to quarterback Matt Cassel.

The Chargers current right tackle is Jeromey Clary. Last season Clary allowed 9.5 sacks, losing 53.50 yards in the process. He wasn’t highly penalized, but most fans would agree that his number of sacks allowed certainly made up for that.

Is Winston an upgrade at right tackle? Slightly. Winston is one of the higher penalized players in the game.
