When The Chargers selected Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft, many analyst thought The Chargers got a huge steal…

Last Sunday night, Allen may have proved those analyst right…Allen had his breakout performance of the season against The Raiders with 6 catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Allen’s night could have been even better as he was targeted 9 times during the game, more importantly Allen is being looked at as red zone weapon for Philip Rivers.

Following the first big game of his pro career, The Chargers have placed Allen as the #1 wide receiver on the depth chart. Allen said early on in training camp that he wanted to be a starter for this team. When fellow receivers Danario Alexander and Malcolm Floyd went down with season ending injuries, Allen was called upon to step up. Right now, Allen is letting his play on the field speak for itself.

While the former Cal Bear is still only a rookie, the early promise that Allen is showing through the first 5 weeks cannot be over looked. He is turning into a real bright spot for the offense and gaining the trust of his quarterback.

“I’m out here trying to get a win,” he said.  “I’m doing anything for the team trying to get a ‘W’ (so) it’s doing whatever I can.”

Before the season is over, I believe that Allen is going to make a case to be one of the year’s most productive rookie wide receivers. Chargers fans should be excited from what they have seen from Allen so far this season, but should be even more interested in what they will see from him in the future.
