No. 21 San Diego State defeats Colorado State 71-61

San Diego,CA- The No. 21 ranked San Diego State Aztecs defeated Colorado State 71-61 Wednesday night at Colorado State. San Diego State improves to (11-1) on the season the second best start in program history and (1-0) in Mountain West Conference play.

For the Aztecs it was their first win at Colorado State since 2011. The Aztecs had previously lost the the last two meetings at Colorado State.

The (9-5) Rams kept the game close throughout the first half, until the Aztecs went on a 7-0 run to close the half. The Aztecs lead Colorado State 36-27 at the half, despite shooting just three free throws to Colorado State’s eleven. San Diego State did dominate in the paint outscoring Colorado State in the paint 24-4.

The Rams were able to keep the game close throughout the 2nd half, keeping the Aztecs lead to single digits throughout the half until the games final seconds. That didn’t much to the Aztecs as they never trailed once in the 2nd half on their way to a 71-61 win over the Rams.

Xavier Thames lead the Aztecs in scoring with 23 points. Winston Shepard was second in scoring with 17 points. Josh Davis had a great game for the Aztecs on the board with 15 rebounds to go along with 7 points.

For the San Diego State Aztecs this was their tenth straight win since losing at home to number one ranked Arizona and their fifth win streak of ten games or more in program history. The four previous streaks were 20 games in 2011, 13 in 1956, 11 in 2013 and 11 2012 .

With the win San Diego State also extends it’s conference-opening game wining streak to seven games, the longest active streak in the Mountain West Conference.

The Aztecs now head to Kansas for their final non-conference game of the season, as they take on No. 16 Kansas and the number one player in the Nation in Andrew Wiggins on Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse.
