San Diego, CA- The San Diego Padres shutout the Colorado Rockies 5-0 Monday afternoon in game number 13 of cactus league play.
The Padres improve to (4-6-3) on the spring.
Padres Ace Andrew Cashner (2-0) continued his dominant start to the spring, allowing no runs on five hits, while striking out one in four innings of work. Cashner has still yet to allow a run this spring in his nine innings pitched.
The Padres would score the games first run in the top of the second, as new Padre Alex Castellanos lead-off the inning with a single in his first at-bat as a San Diego Padre. Utility infielder Ryan Jackson, who has impressed many this spring with not only his gold-glove caliber fielding ability, but also his better than advertised bat, launched a two-run homer to left for his first home-run of the spring to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. The Padres would add another run to end the inning, as Rockies left-hander Franklin Morales would allow catcher Rene Rivera to score from third on a wild pitch and increase the Padres lead to 3-0.
The score would remain the same until the top of the eighth, when the Padres would extend their lead to 5-0 over the Rockies on an RBI double by Top Padres Prospect Rymer Liriano to score Reymond Fuentes and an RBI double by Kyle Blanks.
Padres reliever Tony Sipp closed the game out for the Padres in the ninth, as the Padres shutout the Rockies 5-0. Sipp has been impressive this spring, as he hasn’t allowed a run in his six innings of relief.
Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal made his Cactus League debut today for the Padres coming off last season’s ACL injury. Grandal went 1-2 in his debut and singled on a line drive to center on the first pitch of his first at-bat of the spring.
Padres Pitching Prospects Joe Wieland and Jesse Hahn were also impressive on the day. Wieland pitched two scoreless innings and Hahn pitched one scoreless inning.
