San Diego Padres defeat the Chicago Cubs 7-1

San Diego, CA- The San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-1 Monday night.

The Padres improve to (10-12-6) in Cactus League play.

Carlos Villanueva, who could step in as the fifth starter for the Cubs, gave up three runs on three hits and three walks over four innings, striking out three.

The Cubs scored the games first run in the first on an RBI ground-out by Donnie Murphy to score Emilio Bonifacio and give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Padres would tie the game in the second on an RBI double by Seth Smith to score Jedd Gyorko and tie the game at 1-1.

Tommy Medica would give the Padres the lead in the fourth on a two-run home run to give the Padres the lead 3-1.

The Padres would add to their lead in the fifth as Everth Cabrera and will Will Venable scored on an RBI double by Chase Headley and an RBI single by Seth Smith to increase the Padres lead to 5-1. The Padres would add two more runs in the eighth as Nick Hundley scored on a wild-pitch and Alexi Amarista scored on an RBI ground-out by Will Venable to increase the Padres lead to 7-1.

Padres closer Huston Street would close the game out in the ninth, as the Padres defeat the Cubs 7-1.

Eric Stults was solid in his final start of the spring, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out three in 5.2 innings of work.
