San Diego State Aztecs finish the season ranked No. 12/13 in Top-25 Polls

San Diego, CA- The San Diego State Aztecs finish the season ranked No. 12/13 in Top-25 Polls. The Aztecs were ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 poll and No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Aztecs went (31-5) this season and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament, before falling to No. 1 Seed Arizona 70-64 . The Aztecs also won the Mountain West regular-season championship with the most conference wins by an Aztecs team, as they went (16-2) in conference play. For the Aztecs this was eighth Mountain West Conference Championship in program history. The Aztecs also tied a school record with 20 consecutive victories and their 31 wins are the second most in program history.

The Aztecs have been ranked in the final Top 25 polls in three of the last four seasons. The Aztecs finished program best No.6 in the final AP Top 25 poll in 2011, No. 22 in 2012, and No. 13 this year. In the final USA Today Coaches Poll’s  the Aztecs have finished as high as No.11 in 2011 and this season at No.12.

The Aztecs were ranked in the Top 25 throughout the season. Despite starting the season unranked the Aztecs finished the season ranked in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll for 16 straight weeks to end the season. The Aztecs were raked as high as No. 5 in both polls this season.

The Aztecs won’t have to worry about being unranked to begin next season as the Aztecs despite the loss of Xavier Thames, Josh Davis and James Johnson return three starters in Winston ShepardSkylar Spencer, JJ O’Brien and Dwayne PoleeMatt Shrigley, Aqeel Quinn and Dakari Allen off the bench.

To go along with that the Aztecs are bringing in a a top-15 recruiting class, the highest ranked recruiting class in program history with the highest ranked recruit in program history at (No.17) 5 star  6-9 Small forward Malik Pope and 4 star 6-8 Small forward Zylan Cheatham, 4 star 6-2 Point Guard Kevin Zabo and San Diego’s top recruit 4 star 6-4 Shooting Guard Trey Kell. Arizona Transfer 6-9 Power Forward Angelo Chol will be eligible to play as well, after siting out this season.
