Aztecs win their second straight Mountain West Baseball Championship

San Diego, CA- The San Diego State Aztecs baseball team defeated UNLV 4-3 for the Aztecs second straight Mountain West Baseball Championship. The Aztecs to improve to (42-19) on the season, their highest win total since winning 43 games in 2009.

The Aztecs scored the games first runs in the top of the first as Greg Allen scored on an RBI single by Ty France to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead. France would score on a sacrifice fly by Seby Zavala and Brad Haynal would score on a bunt single by Steven Pallares to give the Aztecs a 3-0 lead.

The lead wouldn’t last long for the Aztecs as the Rebels scored three runs in the bottom of the first off Aztecs starter Bubba Derby to tie the game at 3-3.

The game would remain tied until the sixth, as the Aztecs scored in the top of the sixth as Seby Zavala scored on an Evan Potter sacrifice fly to give the Aztecs a 4-3 lead.

Aztecs closer Michael Cederoth would close out the game in the 9th for his 20th save of the season to seal the win for the Aztecs. With the save Cederoth tied Arizona Diamondbacks closer Addison Reed for the Aztecs record for most saves in a season.

Brad Haynal was named the conference tournament MVP after he hit .636 for the Aztecs with four doubles, a triple, three RBI and nine runs scored.

According to most projections the Aztecs were likely to make the NCAA tournament as an at large team if they didn’t win the conference championship, but with the win the Aztecs clinched the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
