Padres Trade Rumors: Blue Jays interested in Padres 3rd Baseman Chase Headley

San Diego, CA- Jeff Sanders of  UT-San Diego is reporting that according to sources the Toronto Blue Jays have expressed interest in acquiring San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley.

More from San Diego Padres

According to Sanders several teams have inquired on Chase Headley’s availability and have sent scouts to watch him closely this weekend. Sanders also reports that the Padres are “open for business” and everyone except starting pitcher Andrew Cashner is available.

The Padres likely won’t be able to acquire top prospects for Chase Headley due to him being in the last year of his contract, his $10.5 million dollar salary and his awful play and decline the past few seasons. The Padres may just have to settle for dumping Chase Headley’s salary to save money for acquiring free-agents this offseason.

The Blue Jays need a 3rd Baseman after losing their starting third baseman Brett Lawrie for about two months with a broken index finger on this throwing hand. The Blue Jays are currently in first place in the AL East and are going to be buyers at the trade deadline in order to continue to maintain their lead in the competitive AL East.

Chase Headley’s career has plummeted since his breakout season in 2012 when he hit .286 with with 31 homers and a National League leading 115 RBIs. Everyone believed that the Padres once Top Prospect was on his way to becoming a star and the impact bat the Padres have spent years trying to develop.

Instead Headley’s career has been in complete free fall.

Last season Headley failed to even come close to his 2012 numbers, batting only .250 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI’s in only 141 games. This season Headley has struggled mightily at the plate batting only .199 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 58 games.

  • Headley has also struggled to stay healthy as he’s missed 21 missed games with two right calf strains, a strained right biceps, a sore left knee and just recently a herniated disc.

The Padres reportedly offered Chase Headley a long-term extension this off-season, but the offer was rejected by Chase Headley. The Padres should count themselves lucky that Chase Headley rejected their offer, because Headley isn’t worth the 90 million they offered him and he isn’t even worth the 10 million he’s being paid this season.

In my opinion Chase Headley is an average Major League 3rd baseman that has now become injury prone and the Padres should cut their losses and try to get whatever they can for their declining 3rd baseman.
