San Diego, CA- The Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres are in discussion about a possible trade for Padres 3rd baseman Chase Headley according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. Morosi also mentions that talks between the two teams have increased due to the Blue Jays glaring need for a 3rd baseman with the injuries to Brett Lawrie and All-Star Edwin Encarnacion.

Jeff Sanders of UT-San Diego reported last week that the Toronto Blue Jays have expressed interest in acquiring San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley.

The Blue Jays after being in first place in the AL East for most of the first half of the season, have now fallen to two games behind the red hot Baltimore Orioles for 1st place in the AL East and because of their decline and injuries their interest in Chase Headley has increased significantly in the past week. With Brett Lawrie being out for about two months with a broken index finger on his throwing hand and and Edwin Encarnacion being out at least two weeks with a right quad strain, the Blue Jays are in desperate need for a replacement at 3rd base.

Chase Headley’s career has plummeted since his breakout season in 2012 when he hit .286 with with 31 homers and a National League leading 115 RBIs. Everyone believed that the Padres once Top Prospect was on his way to becoming a star and the impact bat the Padres have spent years trying to develop.

Instead Headley’s career has been in complete free fall.

Last season Headley failed to even come close to his 2012 numbers, batting only .250 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI’s in only 141 games. This season Headley has struggled mightily at the plate batting only .217 with 6 home runs and 25 RBI’s in 67 games.

The Padres it is assumed won’t likely be able to acquire top prospects for Chase Headley due to him being in the last year of his contract, his $10.5 million dollar salary and his decline the past few seasons. Yet with the Blue Jays sudden desperate need at third base, if the Padres decide to eat some or all of Headleys salary they may be able to acquire some top talent for Headley. If not the Padres may just have to settle for dumping Chase Headley’s salary to save money for acquiring free-agents this offseason.
