San Diego State Aztecs defeat Hawaii and move into 1st place in Mountain West’s West Division

San Diego, CA- The San Diego State Aztecs and Donnel Pumphrey ran over Hawaii 20-10 to move into first place in the West Division of the Mountain West. San Diego State Aztecs improved to (4-3, 3-1 MW) on the season and Hawaii fell to (2-5, 1-1 MW).

The Aztecs rushed for 283 yards on Hawaii’s defense and senior quarterback Quinn Kaehler added 174 yards through the air in his first start since injuring his shoulder in Week 5.

The Aztecs would begin the ground assault on their opening drive as they rushed for 83 yards with 10 of those yards coming on a touchdown run by Pumphrey to give the Aztecs a 7-0 lead. The Aztecs would tack on a 36-yard field goal by Donny Hageman to give the Aztecs a 10-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Aztecs were held scoreless in the 2nd quarter and were about to head into the half up 10-0, until the the Aztecs accidentally tipped a Hail Mary pass into the endzone for a Hawaii touchdown to cut the Aztecs lead to 10-7 at the half.

The Aztecs defense made up for their mistake in the 2nd half by holding Hawaii to only three points and forcing three turnovers.

Quinn Kaehler would extend the Aztecs lead to 17-10 midway through the 3rd quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass to Lloyd Mills. Hageman would tack on a 23-yard field goal in the 4th to extend the Aztecs lead to 20-10.

Pumphrey rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries for his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season.
