San Diego, CA- The San Diego State Aztecs defeated Point Loma Nazarene 74-45 Friday night in their only public exhibition game of the season. The San Diego State Aztecs last week defeated Stanford 72-64 in a “Secret Scrimmage”.

Point Loma held their own with the San Diego State Aztecs to begin the game, holding the Aztecs to 5-15 from the field to keep the game tied 11-11 midway through the 1st half.

The Aztecs seemed to be awakened with 9 minutes to go in the first half, as forward Matt Shrigley was fouled from behind on a dunk attempt by Point Loma’s Judd Welfringer. Welfringer was charged with a flagrant foul.

The Aztecs following the foul finished the half on a 17-3 run. The San Diego State Aztecs lead Point Loma 32-16 at the half.

The Aztecs never let up, as they began the second half on a 6-0 run and outscored Point Loma 42-29 to seal a 74-45 win.

Winston Shepard lead the Aztecs in scoring with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Heralded recruits Trey Kell and Kevin Zabo made their debut for the Aztecs. Kell started the game at point guard and was impressive throughout the game. Kell finished with 10 points and two assists and could very well be the Aztecs starting point guard to begin the season. Originally the Aztecs were expecting Kell to come off the bench to provide an offensive spark, but if Kell is ready to be the Aztecs starting point guard, it just adds another dynamic scoring threat to the Aztecs starting line-up.

Angelo Chol also made his San Diego State Aztecs debut tonight, and finished with 7 points and three rebounds.

The San Diego State Aztecs shot 50 percent from the field and out rebounded PLNU 44-27. The Aztecs also displayed their dominating defense by holding Point Loma to 31 percent from the field.

The Aztecs begin their regular season next Friday against CSUN at Viejas Arena at 7 p.m.
