The Chargers lost an all-time great this past Saturday as former guard Walt Sweeney passed away at the age of 71. He’d been fighting pancreatic cancer.
Drafted with the second pick back in the AFL draft of 1963, Sweeney was an outstanding guard for the Chargers. He helped the Chargers win the 1963 AFL Championship. He was selected to nine All-Star Games/Pro Bowls during his career. He was a tough guy, playing through pain and injuries on his way to playing in 181 consecutive games at one point in his career. He was also selected as a member of the AFL All-Second Team.
He’s a member of the Chargers Hall of Fame and theBolts 50th Anniversary Team.
