The Chargers have made their first move of the day with the release of veteran tight end Randy McMichael.

The 11-year veteran has spent the last three seasons wearing gold and blue. His first two seasons were decent as a back up tight end but last season he completely fell off the map in Charger Town. After catching over 20 passes his first two seasons, he only caught 9 for a meager 51 yards last season.

McMichael had another year left on his contract and was due to make $135,000. With this release, it could mean that the Chargers might pursue a more suitable, younger tight end late in the draft to compliment Ladarius Green. Dante Rosario is also on the roster but is a free agent starting at 4 pm. The Chargers haven’t said one way or the other if he’ll be back. Antonio Gates is getting up there and has noticeably been slowing down in the past few seasons with injuries and age. If the Chargers are truly rebuilding, they might be looking to set up replacements for Gates in the very near future.

Overall, this move shouldn’t affect the Chargers. While McMichael was a veteran, Green should be able to step in nicely and fill the void.
