San Diego State rallied in the second half to take down the Oklahoma Sooners in last night’s first round action, 70-55.
To no one’s surprise, Jamaal Franklin stepped up and took over for the Aztecs. He scored 21 points and had eight boards, all on the defensive side. James Rahon added 17 points while Chase Tapley added 10. Deshawn Stephens was three points away from a double-double as he scored seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds, with six coming on the offensive side.
For the Sooners, Romero Osby was the only player to really do much of anything. He was the only player in double figures, with 22. He added eight boards in the losing effort.
SDSU will advance to the field of 32 to take on upset-minded Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles took down #2 seeded Georgetown, 78-68.
The Eagles had a good night out of their leading scorer, Sherwood Brown. Brown scored 24 points and had nine rebounds. Bernard Thompson added 23 points and seven rebounds while guard Brett Comer had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists.
The Aztecs, although ranked higher, will have their hands full with #15 seed Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles seemed to dismantle the Hoyas at will, and will be looking to do the same to the Aztecs.
Tip-off is set for Sunday at 7:10 pm ET from the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia.
