While the San Diego Chargers failed to pull off a win against the Seattle Seahawks in last nights preseason game it was still a fun game to watch. By 7:05 I was eating the biggest taco salad I have ever seen, at the Q, watching my Bolts and had the best seats ever. So, the ambiance could not have been better. The team, well, there were glimpses of great and then there was the rest.
The first drive was lead by Philip Rivers and had all of the healthy starters in. Mathews ran, Gates caught big passes and the Chargers marched 74 yards down the field for a field goal. After that, it was a lot of poor passing and odd decision making by Charlie Whitehurst. The QB stats show Philip Rivers 5-of-6 for 45 yards while Charlie Whitehurst was 7-of-15 for 59 yards and Brad Sorensen was 7-of-10 for 84 yards and a touchdown. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, why is Clipboard Charlie still a Charger? Sorensen should be the second guy in line.
The O-Line looked decent, but not as great as I was expecting. The last thing I wanted to see in a preseason game is Rivers running the ball! I was holding my breath and got guacamole on my LT jersey. Keenan Allen looked like a pro, I cannot wait to see this kid in regular season. He is going to be a play maker and is going to become one of Rivers favorite targets. Manti Te’o showed the vision and speed we expected and was greeted like a veteran by the crowd.
I had a great time. Happy that football is back and enjoyed the beautiful venue. I know that 50 of those kids will not be on the field in a month and that really is the reason for preseason. Finding out who is just not qualified for the job. Each week that goes by, the Chargers will look more like a NFL team and less like a college team.
