Howard Smith-USA TODAY SportsSan Diego,CA- San Diego Chargers Running Back Ryan Mathews returned to practice today for the first time this week.

Mathews had missed the last two days of practice this week due to an ankle injury he suffered Sunday during the Chargers 26-13 win over the Raiders.
Mathews left the game in the 4th quarter with a left ankle injury. Matthews re-entered the game later on in the 4th quarter and was able to finish the game. Mathews then exited the locker room after the game wearing a protective boot on his left foot and had not practiced at all this week until today.

Yet according to Chargers Head Coach Mike McCoy they expected Ryan Mathews to be ready for Sundays game against the Chiefs all week.

"“He’s doing fine,” McCoy said. “He’ll be ready. He’s got a great frame of mind right now. I’m looking forward to him having another big game.”"

Mathews had limited participation in practice today with his left ankle heavily taped.

It’s safe to assume now that Mathews missing the last few days of practice was just a precaution to make sure he was ready to play against the Chiefs on Sunday.

Mathews has had a solid season for the Chargers rushing for 99-yards and a touchdown in his last game and 1,111 rushing yards on the season, a new career high. Mathew’s 1,111 yards have him in ninth place on the NFL rushing leaders list. One yard behind Green Bay Packers Eddie Lacy for 8th, three yards behind San Francisco 49ers Frank Gore for 7th and three hundred sixty five yards behind the NFL’s rushing leader LeSean McCoy.

Chargers Wide-Receiver Eddie Royal who missed the last few days of practice with a toe injury returned to practice today as well.
