After suffering tough back-to-back losses against San Francisco and Gonzaga, the Toreros held on to beat Portland 65-63 on Friday night. Johnny Dee, the junior guard for USD, scored a team-high 21 points and Dennis Kramer, the Toreros’ senior forward, added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. While Christopher Anderson once again struggled with his shot, he added 8 assists to help the Toreros take the hard fought game. After struggling for much of this season, the Toreros seem to be making progress toward being more successful in WCC play. Despite going 1-2 on the three game road trip, USD was close in every game and showed glimpses of why people thought this team could be one of the top teams in the WCC this year. The Toreros have four consecutive home games coming up, beginning with Saint Mary’s coming to the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday night. It will be interesting to see if the team can carry the momentum from its win against Portland into the next game.
