San Diego State Aztecs remain No. 5 in the latest Top 25 poll’s

San Diego,CA- The
San Diego State Aztecs are once again No. 5 in both the Associated Press and Coaches Top 25 poll this week.

The only teams ahead of the San Diego State Aztecs are Arizona, Syracuse, Wichita St. and Florida.

It’s San Diego States highest ranking in the AP poll once again since the 2010-11 season, when the Aztecs were ranked No. 6 entering the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs are still one spot off their highest ranking in school history, as the Aztecs were ranked No. 4 in the nation at one point during the 34-3 season. In program history the Aztecs are 27-3 all-time as a Top 10 team.

The Aztecs also continue to be the highest ranked team on the west coast, with no other west coast team ranked in the Top 25 poll’s.

The No. 5 ranked San Diego State Aztecs defeated the Colorado State Rams Saturday afternoon 65-56 for Steve Fishers 300th career win as an Aztec. Coach Fisher now becomes only the 18th coach in Division 1 to have a head coach that has won 300 or more games at their current school.

The Aztecs dominating defense had their way in the first half, holding the Rams without a field-goal for seven minutes. The Rams also became the seventh opponent to be held to 20 points or less in the first half by the Aztecs

Xavier Thames lead the Aztecs in scoring with 24 points and seven rebounds. Winston Shepard was second in scoring with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Aztecs improved to (19-1) on the season and extended their win streak to 18 games straight. The Aztecs also improved to 8-0 Mountain West conference play for the first time in the program’s 93-year history.

Aztecs have now defeated Colorado State 11th straight time’s at home and the Aztecs have won five of the last six vs. the Rams.

San Diego State’s 18 straight game win streak continues to be the second-longest win streak in program history. The 18-game win streak is the 3rd-longest active streak nationally, trailing only Wichita State and Syracuse.

The Aztecs are now (19-1) on the season and will play at Boise State on Wednesday and host Nevada at home on Saturday.
