San Diego State Aztecs once again No. 5 in the latest Top 25 poll’s

San Diego State Aztecs are once again No. 5 for the 3rd straight week in both the Associated Press and Coaches Top 25 poll this week.

The only teams ahead of the San Diego State Aztecs are Syracuse, Arizona, Wichita St. and Florida.

It’s San Diego States highest ranking in the AP poll once again since the 2010-11 season, when the Aztecs were ranked No. 6 entering the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs are still one spot off their highest ranking in school history, as the Aztecs were ranked No. 4 in the nation at one point during the 34-3 season. In program history the Aztecs are 29-3 all-time as a Top 10 team.

The No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs rallied from a 14-point deficit Wednesday to stun the Boise State Bronco’s on a last-second three 67-65 Wednesday night. With his fifth-ranked team trailing by one in the games final seconds, when Aztecs senior point guard  Xavier Thames who everyone assumed was going to take the final shot until he found Dwayne Polee II wide open as he drained a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to give the Aztecs the come from behind win.

Then the Aztecs tied the School-Record 20 Game win streak Saturday night with a 73-58 win over the Nevada Wolfpack.

Aztecs started the game strong going on an 14-9 run to take the lead. Nevada was able to keep the game close throughout the first half as the Aztecs and Wolfpack traded the lead back and forth, until the Aztecs went on a 6-0 run to end the half and lead the Wolfpack 37-31 at the half. The Aztecs maintained a single digit lead to start the second half, before going on a 12-6 run to end the game and defeat the Wolfpack 73-58.

Xavier Thames lead the Aztecs in scoring with 17 points. Winston Shepard playing with a sprained wrist had 16 points to help lead the Aztecs to victory.

The Aztecs The Aztecs improve to (21-1, 10-0 Mountain West) on the year and are now tied for the best start in program history. With the win the Aztecs tied the schools 20-game win streak by the (34-3) 2010-11 team, which won its first 20 games before losing to Jimmer Fredette and BYU. The Aztecs also extend their winning streak to 20-game’s which is the 3rd longest active streak nationally, trailing only Wichita State and Syracuse.

The Aztecs also continue to be the highest ranked team on the west coast, with no other west coast team ranked in the Top 25 poll’s.

The Aztecs return to the court Tuesday night as they head to Wyoming to take on the Cowboys. The game will be air on ESPNU.
