San Diego State Aztecs win season-opening series against San Jose State

San Diego, CA- The San Diego State Aztecs baseball team won their season-opening series against the San Jose State Spartans. The Aztecs after losing the season opener Friday, won the final two games of the weekend to win the series.
Game 1:
The Aztecs in their season opener were unable to hold onto their lead as the Spartans defeated the Aztecs 6-4.
The Aztecs scored the first run of the game in he third on an RBI single by Seby Zavala to give the Aztecs the lead 1-0. The Aztecs extended their lead to 4-2 after scoring three runs in the fourth, that knocked out the Spartans starting pitcher Johnny Melero.
Aztec’s Ace Michael Cederoth struggled in his first start of the season allowing five runs in 3.2 innings, while striking out six and walking four. Three of the four walks scoring in the Spartans five run fourth to give the Spartans a 5-4 lead, as the Spartans defeated the Aztecs 6-4.
Game 2:
The Aztecs rebounded on Saturday to defeat the Spartans 5-3 and even the series.
The Aztecs once again scored the first run of the game in the second to take an early 1-0 lead, on a sacrifice fly by Brad Haynal. The Aztecs broke the game open in the fourth, scoring four runs on RBI doubles by France, Haynal and an RBI single by Tim Zier’s.
Aztec’s starter Mike Robards (1-0) was solid on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings for his first win of the season.
Game 3:
Aztecs score 11 runs to overcome a five-run deficit and defeat the Spartans 13-8 Sunday afternoon to win the series.
All nine players in the SDSU lineup had at least one hit, eight players scored and seven recorded an RBI.
The Aztecs scored the games first runs, scoring in the first and second innings to take the lead 2-0, on an RBI groundout by Seby Zavala and an RBI double by Greg Allen.
Aztec sophomore pitcher Mark Seyler, in his first career start struggled mightily as he allowed four runs on three hits and four walks in 1 inning of work.
The Spartans knocked Seyler out of the game in the second scoring seven runs to take the lead 7-2.
The Aztecs would retake the lead in the third, scoring seven runs to take an 11-7 lead, on two-run singles by Spencer Thornton, Tim Zier and a three-run home run by Brad Haynal. The Aztecs bullpen would hold the lead as they defeat the Spartans 13-8.
The Aztecs return home for their home opener against Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
