San Diego State Aztecs defeat West Virginia 2-1 in Extra Innings

San Diego, CA- The San Diego State Aztecs defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 2-1 in extra innings Saturday night.

Aztec’s starter Bubba Derby and West Virgina’s Sean Carley dominated the opposing offense’s to start the game, as the game remained scoreless through five.

Derby unfortunately would blink first in tonight’s pitching dual, allowing a two-out RBI single by Ryan McBroom to give West Virginia a 1-0 lead.

The Aztecs would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error by West Virginia’s starting pitcher Sean Carley with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied until the 1oth when with one out in the bottom of the 10th, as the Aztecs load the bases and Aztecs Tyler Adkison hit a grounder to short and beat the relay throw from second to allow the game winning run to score and give the Aztecs the victory.

With the win the Aztecs improve to (4-2) on the season and tie the three-game series at one game a piece.

Derby, who was excellent tonight on the mound allowed one run on four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings of work. Aztecs ace Michael Cederoth came in relief in the ninth and picked up his first win of the season to to even his record at (1-1).

Aztecs second baseman Tim Zier lead the Aztecs on offense, going 3-4 with a run scored.

The Aztecs return to action tomorrow for game three of the three game series against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
