New Mexico Upsets No.6 San Diego State 58-44

San Diego,CA- The New Mexico Lobos upset rival No. 6 San Diego State 58-44 Saturday night. The Aztecs were out played and out matched from the start.
New Mexico lead the Aztecs from the start and never trailed. The Lobos came out of the gate firing on offense, leading the Aztecs 23-14 midway through the first half. The Aztecs were able to go on a run to end the half and cut the Lobos lead to 29-22 at the half.
The Aztecs were horrific on offense in the first half, as the Aztecs only shot 29.7% from the field and leading scorer Xavier Thames was only 1 for 9 from the field.
The Aztecs would score to start the second half to cut the Lobo’s lead to five, but that’s as close as the Aztecs would get as the Lobos blew out the Aztecs in the second half to defeat the Aztecs 58-44. New Mexico took control of the game, going on a 21-2 run after the Aztecs scored the first basket of the second half to put the game away.
The key to the game tonight was simple for the Aztecs….they had to contain the Lobos leading scorer Cameron Bairstow and they did anything but.
Bairstow dominated the game in the post, scoring 26 points, with 10 of his points coming in the Lobos 21-2 second half run.
Tonight once again showed the Aztecs biggest weakness, any given night if the Aztecs don’t score they can’t win. The Aztecs held the Lobos to a season low 58 points, but even that wasn’t enough to even keep the game close, let alone win. The Aztecs formula is plain and simple if the Aztecs score their average of 60-70 points they more and likely will win, but on nights when the offense isn’t their, asking the team to hold the opposing offense to less than 50 points is a tough task for any team to do in College basketball.
