The San Diego State Aztecs are projected to be a 3 or 4 seed after their loss to the New Mexico Lobos 64-58 in the Mountain West Conference tournament championship Saturday afternoon.

  • ESPN.com’s Bracketologist Joe Lunardi predicts the San Diego State Aztecs to be the 4th seed in the West Region and will take on the 13th seed the University of Delaware in Spokane, Washington.
  • CBSSports.com’s Bracketologist Jerry Palm predicts the San Diego State Aztecs to be the 3rd seed in the West Region and will take on the 14th seed New Mexico State in Spokane, Washington.
  • In the lowest of all the projections, USA Today’s Bracketologist Shelby Mast predicts the San Diego State Aztecs to be the 5th seed in the West Region and will take on the 12th seed winner of the play in game between BYU/SMU in Spokane, Washington.
  • SB Nation’s Bracketologist  Chris Dobbertean predicts the San Diego State Aztecs to be the 4th seed in the West Region and will take on the 13th seed New Mexico State in Spokane, Washington.
  • Yahoo Sports Bracketologist Brad Evans predicts the San Diego State Aztecs to be the 4th seed in the West Region and will take on the 13th seed Stephen F. Austin in Spokane, Washington.

Overall, in my opinion the San Diego State Aztecs should be the 3rd seed in the West Region. The Aztecs may have had a chance at a two seed heading into the Mountain West Conference tournament championship Saturday afternoon, but the loss to New Mexico ended any hopes of that. The Aztecs finished the year as the No. 8/ N0. 7 team in the nation at (29-4). The Aztecs were the Mountain West Conference Regular Season Champion’s and have one of the more impressive resumes in the nation. The Aztecs had the 15th best RPI in the nation with wins over No. 14 Creighton, No. 10 Kansas, No. 20 New Mexico and at the time ranked No. 25 Marquette.

The Aztecs are in my opinion the best defensive team in the Nation and I expect the Aztecs to at least make it to the Sweet Sixteen and possibly even the elite eight or final four if the Aztecs get the right match-ups and the offense steps up its game to support Xavier Thames. When the Aztecs play to their potential on offense and score around 70 points to combine with their top ranked defense that holds teams to less than 60 points per game, the Aztecs can play with anyone in the nation.
