Maybin and Alonso homer as the Padres defeat the White Sox
By Joel Burdeos
San Diego, CA- Ian Kennedy had one of his best starts of the season and Cameron Maybin hit his first homerun of the season as the San Diego Padres defeat the Chicago White Sox 4-1. For the Padres this was their first trip to Cellular Field since 2003.
The Padres scored the games first run in the third on Maybin’s first homerun of the season to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.
The White Sox would tie the game in the fourth as Conor Gillaspie scored on a wild pitch by Ian Kennedy to tie the game at 1-1.
Rene Rivera would give the Padres back the lead in the top of the fifth, as he scored from third on a wild pitch by John Danks to give the Padres the lead 2-1.
Yonder Alonso would extend the Padres lead to 4-1 in the eighth on a two run home-run by Alonso, his fourth of the season.
Padres closer and more than likely their all-star representative this season Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save in of the season to seal the win for the Padres. Street is now 16 for 16 on save opportunities this season.
Ian Kennedy improved to (4-6) on the season, after allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine in six innings of work. It was good to see the Padres offense finally support Kennedy as his record on the season is not a good indication of how well he’s pitched this season.
On offense Alonso was 3-for-4 and Chris Denorfia and Carlos Quentin had two hits each. Quentin also tonight extended his hitting streak to nine straight games.
