San Diego, CA- According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals are interested in acquiring San Diego Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy.

More from Trade Rumors

The Pirates are currently in the market for rotation and bullpen help and the Royals are most likely more interested in acquiring more offense as we approach the trade deadline.

The New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels have all expressed interest in Ian Kennedy. The Angels had the most interest in Ian Kennedy, but didn’t have the elite prospects necessary to match up with the Padres on a trade for Ian Kennedy, which is why they gave up their pursuit of Kennedy to finish a deal with the Padres last night for all-star closer Huston Street.

Ian Kennedy has been one of the Padres most consistent starters this season with a 3.47 ERA in 20 starts with 133 strikeouts in 124.1 innings of work. The Padres acquired Ian Kennedy last season at the trade deadline from the Arizona Diamondbacks for reliever Joe Thatcher.

  • The Padres control Ian Kennedy through 2015 and Padres ownership isn’t interested in trading away their best talent unless they get a significant amount in return. According to Dennis Lin of U-T San Diego the Padres don’t want to part with Ian Kennedy, despite his high value, the Padres will most likely hold onto Kennedy and may give him a big contract at the end of the season unless some team blows them away with a major package.
