Aztecs Jack the Lumberjacks In 38-7 Win
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks came into Qualcomn Stadium looking to spoil the SDSU Aztecs home opener. The Aztecs came in with a game plan of running fast and hard and they accomplished that today.
Donnel Pumphrey, sophomore running back, started strong. The Aztecs had their second drive of the day at their 37 yard line. Quinn Kaehler, senior quarterback, came out throwing accurate especially to senior wide receiver Ezell Ruffin. Pumphrey would get the call at the 1 yard line to get the first score. 7-0 Aztecs lead.
Aztecs would start their next drive at the 12 yard line. It took a big wide receiver reverse and a 21 yard run by junior running back Chase Price to get the Aztecs in scoring range. Price would run in the ball at the 1 yard line to give the Aztecs a 14-0 lead.
The Aztecs next drive would start at their 31 yard line. They would drive down to the Lumberjacks 31 yard line and junior kicker Donny Hageman kicked a 48 yard field goal to push the Aztec lead to 17-0.
The 14 yard line was where the Aztecs started their next drive and Kaehler was passing quick down field to get them to the Northern Arizona 29 yard line. They would try for a 46 yard field goal that Hageman would miss. The score sat at 17-0.
Quinn Kaehler led the team down with 1:42 to go in the 2nd quarter and would get 75 yards passing to get a touchdown to junior tight end Robert Craighead. At halftime the score is 24-0.
The first drive of the second half for the Aztecs would be ground and pound with Pumphrey. As they crossed midfield, Kaehler would be intercepted by junior Eddie Horn that the Lumberjacks would capitalize for a touchdown. The score would be 24-7.
On the Northern Arizona next drive, sophomore Clavin Munson intercepted the ball to run it down to the 1 yard line. Pumphrey would run the ball in for his 2nd touchdown of the day. The lead was then moved up to 31-7.
Lumberjacks started the 4th quarter with the ball and their punt would lead to a 67 yard return touchdown by sophomore Lloyd Mills. That pushed the lead to 38-7.
Aztecs defense was able to come up and shut the Lumberjacks against the wall. The final score is 38-7 and the Aztecs are able to finish the game with a win. Their next game will be at North Carolina on Saturday, September 6 at 5 p.m. Pacific.
