State Of The Union: San Diego Chargers Injuries Week 17
The San Diego Chargers have a few injuries that are widely known. These injuries are to important players on offense but it gives other players a chance to step up. One player that was to return has been placed on I.R. and it will give the offense incentive to score more.
Center Chris Watt is listed as questionable for Sunday. Watt has had to leave almost every game with an injury and this week he has an ankle injury. If he is not able to go then Trevor Robinson will make his first career start. Robinson has been the better center this year and if he could get more reps then Watt could move over to guard.
Ryan Matthews and Keenan Allen are doubtful with ankle injuries. Allen also suffers from a collarbone injury. Matthews is important to the run game but Branden Oliver continues to rise in his opportunity. If Matthews is not able to go for the season then he might be out of San Diego in the offseason.
Allen’s absence looked obvious in the offense. Dontrelle Inman came off the bench and filled in well. The hope is that Allen will return for the playoffs but if not there are other options. The Chargers worked out Austin Pettis who would fill into Allen’s role. They also worked out John Chiles, a former teammate of Dontrelle Inman in the CFL.
Punter Mike Scifres has been placed on season ending injured reserve. Scifres suffered a broken collarbone against the Patriots. It looked like he would make a full recovery but it is now known that he will not be back.
The best part about these injuries are that none are on defense. All these injuries are at center, running back, and wide receivers which are all positions that can be filled. All season it has been a next man up mentality and it will roll into the playoffs.
