Aztecs Host Lobos In Mountain West Power Battle
San Diego State returns to Viejas Arena to host the New Mexico Lobos. These 2 teams have been the powerhouses of the Mountain West. Anytime these 2 teams play each other, everyone in the college basketball world pays attention.
Both teams are even in overall record but New Mexico is ahead early in the Mountain West race. SDSU will need this win to get back into the upper side standings. They got shocked at Fresno State yet they will be ready for New Mexico.
Head Coach Steve Fisher spoke yesterday about the game, “We don’t like it when they win, they don’t like it when we win and nobody likes it when either of us win. We’ve had great games with New Mexico who we knew we had to find ways to beat if we wanted to finish ahead of them, and we’ll see more of the same tomorrow.” This had been as big of a rivalry as any in college basketball. These team do not like each other and it is going to be one of the toughest games for both teams.
For the Aztecs to win, they need to attack New Mexico in the post. New Mexico is not getting enough rebounds and the Aztecs can attack that weakness. Skylar Spencer, J.J. O’Brien, and Angelo Chol are equipped to have a great game vs. New Mexico.
J.J. O’Brien knows that this game is most important at home, “They always come ready to play. It’s been a home-and-home battle a lot. We’ve been winning here and they have been winning there. We have to protect our home floor.” The older players know how important this game is and it will rub off on the younger guys. As the great young class of players get more experience, this is the game they will continue to remember and circle on the calendar.
The Aztecs will play vs. New Mexico on Tuesday, January 6 at 8 p.m. Pacific on CBS Sports Network.
