This season the Chargers will get to take on the 49ers in the regular season walk-through pre-season game. We will finally get to see Philip Rivers and the Chargers offense take the field for more than one series today, as the the Chargers are expected to play their starters into the third quarter.
In an interview with Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com, Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich expressed the Chargers opportunity to test their offense against one of the best defenses in the NFL.
"“The advantage of going against the 49ers is that they’re a good football team,” Reich said. “And you’re still in preseason mode, so you want to be tested in every area. They have a great front seven, they’ve been a great defense so it’s a good test for us going up against that NFC West. They’ve got the best defenses around, so it will be a good challenge for us offensively.” – Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich"

Most teams like the Chargers prefer to keep their offense basic during the preseason to prevent opposing teams, especially teams their going to face again in the regular season from learning too much about their offense. It will be interesting to see how much the Chargers show on offense, as unlike the Seattle Seahawks who they face in week two, the Chargers don’t face the 49ers again till week 16. Which means the Chargers may be willing to show a little more on offense against the 49ers, given all the adjustments and changes to the offense that will likely be made before they face each other again.
