San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews has a sprained MCL

San Diego, CA- The San Diego Chargers knocked off the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks 30-21 today, but might have lost running back Ryan Mathews.

More from San Diego Chargers

With the Chargers up 27-21 at the start of the 4th quarter, Ryan Mathews fumbled and while attempting to recover the fumble injured his right knee and had to be carted off the field.

Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego is reporting Ryan Mathews has suffered a sprained MCL:

"The Chargers running back was carted off the field Sunday with a knee injury. The early prognosis is he suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament, a source said following a 30-21 win over Seattle. It is unclear how much time he will miss. He’ll likely be further examined to determine the extent of the sprain, which by definition is a tear."

Ryan Mathews is a key piece to the Chargers offense, but the Chargers have prepared themselves for this situation. The Chargers signed running back Donald Brown last off-season as a free-agent to protect themselves in case of an injury to Ryan Matthews.

With Ryan Mathews potentially out, the Chargers will continue to rely on Danny Woodhead, Donald Brown and possibly Branden Oliver and Marion Grice in the running game.

Despite his solid season last year…this could very well be his final season with the San Diego Chargers.

Ryan Mathews has struggled to hold onto the football and stay on the field so far in is career and with the Chargers signing Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown to multi-year deals, the Chargers might be moving on from Ryan Mathews at the end of the season.
