Surprisingly this is the first time that Antonio Gates has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week by the NFL. Unfortunately in the NFL tight-end’s have always been overshadowed by quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers when it comes to the weekly honor. Hopefully Antonio Gates continues to find the end-zone multiple times this season and continues to pick up this honor.
Antonio Gates had seven receptions for 96 yards and three touchdowns, as he converted 3rd downs all game long and came up clutch with a touchdown every time the Chargers needed it.
Gates now has 90 receiving touchdowns for his career, which moves him into 11th place in NFL history for receiving touchdowns. Antonio Gates only needs two more touchdowns to move into 10th place in NFL history for receiving touchdowns. Antonio Gates is already second on the NFL’s all-time list for receiving touchdowns by a tight end and needs 22 more touchdowns to overtake future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez for 1st place.
Antonio Gates also only needs 10 more touchdowns to become only the ninth player in NFL history with 100 career receiving touchdowns.

Entering the season, many expected Antonio Gates to take a backseat to Ladarius Green. Yet what people for got to remember is that while Ladarius Green is extremly talented and Keenan Allen has become Philip Rivers favorite target….when the Chargers are in the red-zone Antonio Gates is still Rivers most trusted target.
