With Danny Woodhead out for the season with a broken fibula and Ryan Mathews out four to five weeks with a sprained MCL the Chargers were expected to rely heavily on Donald Brown and Rookies Branden Oliver and Marion Grice to carry the running game.
Yet despite the opportunity, Marion Grice believed that he had a better opportunity to get on the field with the Arizona Cardinals. According to Michael Gehlken of UT-San Diego, it was Marion Grice’s chose to leave the Chargers as he preferred his opportunity with the Arizona Cardinals.
Rookies Branden Oliver and Marion Grice will also be expected to heavily contribute to the running game. Undrafted rookie free agent Branden Oliver was impressive in the pre-season with 35 rushes for 161 yards and a touchdown. Oliver will likely assume Danny Woodhead’s role in the Chargers offense.

Grice was drafted by the Chargers in the sixth-round of this year’s NFL draft and battled fellow rookie running back Branden Oliver throughout the pre-season for a spot active roster. Grice initially made the Chargers final 53-man roster, but was then cut and signed to the Chargers practice squad.
The Cardinals needed an additional running back to replace Jonathan Dwyer and obviously Grice impressed the Cardinals in his final pre-season game against them. Grice had his best game of the pre-season against the Cardinals.
With Donald Brown and undrafted rookie Branden Oliver currently the only running backs on the Chargers roster, expect them to sign another back to the roster sometime this week for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
