Jacksonville won the toss and chose to receive to begin the game.

The Chargers defense would make their presence felt to begin the game as Toby Gerhart was stripped by Jarret Johnson and the fumble was recovered by Donald Butler at the Jaguars 30.

The Chargers were unable to take advantage of the turnover, as their injured offensive line allowed Philip Rivers to be sacked multiple times to force the Chargers to punt.

The Chargers would stuff the Jaguars on 4th and one on their next drive to take over at midfield. Rivers would drive the ball to the Jacksonville 15, but was unable to score and had to settle for a Nick Novak 33-yard field goal to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead to end the 1st quarter.
